Cagliari
Cagliari is the capital of the island of Sardinia, Italy. It has about 160,000 inhabitants, or about 500,000 including the suburbs (metropolitan area): Assemini, Capoterra, Elmas, Monserrato, Quartucciu, Quartu Sant'Elena, Selargius, Sestu.
Tram in Cagliari started its operation on March 17, 2008. It is pretty unusual to see newly constructed 950 mm gauge modern tram. This was predetermined by the fact that tram line was not constructed “from scratch” but part of Ferrovie della Sardegna (FdS) railway line was electrified and adopted for tram. Another unusual and interesting thing is that tram is mostly single track, while former railways used mostly both tracks. Currently tram operates between Piazza Repubblica and Gottardo (the nearby FdS station is called Monserrato), with seven intermediate stops. Construction continues towards other suburbs and it is planned that in 2009 two more lines will appear: Gottardo (Monserrato) – Settimo S. Pietro (4 km), Gottardo – Policlinico (1.75 km, 4 stations).
First trolleybuses ran on December 22, 1952. However, as in most Italian cities they are now mostly replaced by diesel buses and only trolley poles with catenaries around several streets in the city can be visible now. Trolleybuses remained only on interurban line with two routes # 30 and 31, which have the same route in Cagliari and are circle in suburbs: # 30 in internal circle (Quartucciu – Quartu Sant'Elena), while # 31 in external circle (Quartu Sant'Elena – Quartucciu).
